A 14-year-old boy and a 12-year-old girl were arrested for vandalizing the United Methodist Church on Broad Street in Pittston.

The vandalism was reported March 13 and caused several thousand dollars damage. Investigators said the juveniles admitted they were responsible for the damage.

One of the juveniles said the damage was done in retaliation for a prior incident in which the juvenile was yelled at by someone from the church. The juvenile was upset over being yelled at and went back to the church with the other juvenile and smashed the windows.

The two youths will be charged with institutional vandalism and criminal mischief after official estimates for the damage are received, police said.

The 110-year-old church has been vandalized several other times since January, church officials said.

In January, a stained-glass window was damaged. On Feb. 2, two windows at the back of the church were broken, the marquee was smashed and marquee letters were scattered on the ground.

The church is insured for such damage, but the insurance deductables amounted to $2,000. The church has 60-70 active members.
