The Pittston Knights of Columbus are sponsoring a benefit for the West Pittston Library on Friday, July 12, with the Phylis Hopkins Trio from 8-11 p.m. at 55 S. Main St., Pittston. A $5 donation will be taken at the door. Food and drink specials will be available.

Come to town for the 2nd Friday City Walk then visit the Knights for some great music and food. All are welcome.

The Band is fronted by singer/songwriter/guitarist Phyllis Hopkins who has shared the stage with many blues greats, such as Sonny Rhodes, Shemeka Copeland, and Ronnie Earl. Drummer, Julio Caprari and Nolan Ayers (bass), provide a dynamic and versatile rhythm section. The trio plays an eclectic mix of originals, blues and classic to modern rock.

HUGHESTOWN COUNCIL

Due to the July 4 holiday, the Hughestown Borough work session has been changed. Time for the meeting will be at 7 p.m. July 8 before the regular council meeting. At 7:30 p.m. Wayne Quick will preside.

CHAMBER DAY

The Greater Pittston Chamber of Commerce will have Chamber Day at Montage Meltdown Park, 1000 Montage Mountain Rd., July 12, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Members can purchase tickets for $10 that gives you access to all water attractions and several dry attractions. Discounted tickets must be purchased and paid for in advance through the Chamber by July 11.

West Pittston’s Lt. Jeffrey F. DePrimo American Legion Post 542 will meet on Thursday, July 11 at 6 p.m. at the home of Joe Walsh, 217 Franklin Street, West Pittston. Details on the post’s hosting of veterans from the VA Medical Center at Frances Slocum State Park on July 14 will be discussed. SJH CLASS OF ‘73

St. John’s High School Class of 1973 is meeting to make plans for its 40th class reunion to be held on Saturday, October 12, at a place to be determined. The meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, July 8 at Cooper’s Cabana, Pittston. Classmates are asked to attend to catch up and reminisce.

DIG UP YOUR PAST

In conjunction with Groundbreaking Reads: Adult Summer Reading, The Pittston Memorial Library presents “Digging Up Your Past: Pittston History Series” on Monday, July 8 and Monday, July 15. On July 8, the Genealogical Research Society of Northeastern Pennsylvania will give a how-to presentation on conducting local genealogy searches at 6 p.m. The final installment will be the Greater Pittston Historical Society giving a presentation on Native Americans at 6 p.m.

Join the Pittston Library for “Groundbreaking Reads: 2013 Adult Summer Reading.” Its totally free – you just have to read. Bring in your book log each week for weekly prizes and for each book you read you earn $1 toward a private book sale (max $20). This year, we’ll be having great optional activities and programs like a recipe exchange, a series of local history lectures, book discussions and reading bingo. Signups begin Monday, June 17. The program is from June 24 through August 16.

Summer reading continues at the library for kids to come out and get a book log. For every two books read, the kids will get a prize.

Family nights will be on Thursdays which will include movies or activities for kids preschool to grade 5 and their family. Call to register 654-9565. This week’s movie, “How to Eat Fried Worms,” will be at 5:30 p.m.

BIG BAND PICNIC

The Big Band Society of Northeastern PA will have an Indoor Summer Picnic on Friday, July 12 at Genetti’s Hotel and Convention Center Wilkes Barre. This event is for members only. Please dress in summer casual clothes, no shorts or T-shirts.

The doors will open at 5:45 p.m. with dinner at 6:30 p.m.

Mount Zion United Methodist Church will offer a chicken barbecue on Saturday July 20.

WSCC REUNION

Sixty is the new 40 is the theme of the 60th birthday party for graduates, their spouses or their significant others from the class of West Side Central Catholic High School Class of 1971. Emailed invitations have been sent to those whose addresses on file.

FLEA MARKET

St. Michael’s Byzantine Catholic Church, 205 N. Main St. Pittston will hold its 17th annual flea market and ziti dinner from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 3 and Sunday, Aug. 4 in the church hall.

Along with the Ziti dinner, ethnic foods such as piggies, haluska, pirohi and hot dogs at the snack bar will be available to eat in or take out. Coffee, tea and soft drinks will be available. A bake sale and money raffle will be held. Plenty of parking is available.

Ziti dinner tickets will be sold at the door.
