Wyoming Area senior athletes Emily Shemanski and Zachary LaNunziata are the first recipients of Stephanie Godri-Johnston Memorial Scholarships. Shemanski is a three-sport athlete for the Lady Warriors in soccer, swimming and track and field. She’s a District 2 track medalist. She’s also involved in several school clubs. She was awarded $3,000.

Zachary Lanunziata, a football and track athlete for the Warriors received $1,000 based on his academics and all-around accomplishments.

Stephanie Godri-Johnston, class of 1998, was a Wyoming Area track and cross country athlete and school record-holder who died of colorectal cancer in 2011 at age 32.

On Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012, an inaugural 5k Run called “Steph’s Fall 5k” was run at the Luzerne County fields in Forty Fort to raise money for the Stephanie Godri-Johnston Memorial Scholarship.

The original intent of the run was to raise $3,000 for a scholarship, but it was so successful, an extra $1,000 was raised and awarded to LaNunziata.

The second annual Steph’s run/walk is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 12.
