The next meeting of the Avoca Crime Watch will be at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, August 20, at the Avoca Borough building.

Luzerne County District Attorney Stephanie Salavantis and Guest Luzerne County detective Chaz Balogh will be there to answer any questions and show us how to keep our homes and neighborhoods savfe and secure. Avoca residents are asked to try to attend these meetings and help keep Avoca safe and secure.

Yard waste will be collected for borough residents on the first and third Tuesday of each month.

The following separated items will be collected:

· Grass clippings & leaves (may be in the same container)

· Yard waste - included scrubs, hedge clippings and tree limbs-not exceeding 3 feet in length and ½ inch in diameter. Rocks, stones, dirt and animal waste are not acceptable forms of yard waste.

· A maximum of 3 open containers not to exceed 30 pounds will be allowed per collection.

Do not use plastic bags, or it will be refused. Place containers curbside by 8 a.m.

The Recycling Center will not accept grass & leaves that are combined with yard waste.


Moosic Recycling Truck will be at the Municipal Garage, Plane St. every Thursday, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The new system allows paper to be mixed with cardboard.

Residents are urged to read and follow the signs on the Recycling Truck.

The area will be monitored, and violators can be fined or banned from future recycling privileges.

Recycling flyers are available in the lobby of the Avoca Municipal Bldg., and at the Recycling Trailer.


Ashes are collected Every Wednesday. Please place them are Curbside by 8 a.m.


Effective January 1, Waste Management will no longer collect TV’s and computer equipment: which includes NO Televisions & Computer Monitors/No Computers/No printers & other computer Peripheral Devices and No Components of any of the above listed Devices.

Alumni and friends from Avoca High School are invited to attend the second annual dinner dance/get together on Sept. 7 from 6:30-11 p.m. at St. Mary’s Auditorium, Avoca.

Tickets are $20 each and can be purchased from any committee member. Please contact Carole Berry at 451-1620 for more information and/or tickets.


Due to the Labor Day Holiday, the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary to Post 8335 regular monthly business meeting has been changed to Monday, Sept. 9, at 7 p.m. in the post home, 915 Main St. District President Mary Ann Pauline will be making her official annual inspection of our Auxiliary at this time. President June Fitzgerald will preside over the meeting. Hostesses will be Elaine Frietas, Particia Bartnicki, and Wendy Radle.

Dues for 2013-2014 can also be paid at this meeting.

The next V.A. Bingo Hospital party will be held Oct. 2 at 6:30 p.m for patients at the V.A. Medical Center in Wilkes-Barre. Ladies will leave post home at 5:30 p.m.
