The Son’s of the American Legion, Squadron 585, Duryea will hold its First Annual Fall Rib Dinner. On Saturday, Oct. 5 from 1 to 5 p.m. at the post home. Cost is $12 and includes 1/2 rack barbecue ribs, seasoned baked potato, corn on the cob, homemade coleslaw, roll and dessert.

You can purchase tickets from any Sal’s officer or at the post home.


The Son’s of the American Legion, Squadron 585, Duryea will hold its 2nd Annual Children’s Halloween Party on Saturday, Oct. 26 from 3 to 5 p.m. Party includes Costume Contest, Pizza, Hot Dogs, Ice Cream, and Soda. All Children will receive a goody bag.

Party is open to all children/grandchildren up to age 12 of regular American Legion, Sons of the Legion, Ladies Auxiliary and social members. You must pre-register at the Post Home.


The Son’s of the American Legion, Squadron 585, Duryea is holding an Octoberfest Raffle. Drawing will be held on Saturday, Oct. 5th after their Rib Dinner. Cost is $3 each or 2 for $5. First prize is a $500 gift card to Quality Beverage; Second prize is a $100 gift card to PA, Wine & Spirits; Third prize is a $50 gift card to Komensky’s Market. Money raised will benefit the Greater Pittston Cultural Coalition. You can purchase tickets at the Post or from any Sal’s Officer.


The Polish Falcons Nest 128, Duryea, will have its Annual Children’s Halloween Party on Sunday, Oct. 27 from 1-4 p.m. at the nest. Party is open to Children/Grandchildren of regular and social members up to age 12. There will be Food, Refreshments, Costume Contest, and Games. All kids will receive a Goodie bag. You must pre-register at the club by Oct. 23.


Duryea Borough Council recently passed an ordinance regarding open burning. It is illegal for any person to open burn in the borough except under the circumstances listed in the ordinance.

Any resident who violates the regulations of the ordinance shall be guilty of creating a nuisance. Residents cannot burn any rubbish, garbage, or any material such as leaves on public or private lands. Open burning is allowed in a standard, commercially designed, non-combustible grill used for the non-commercial preparation of food to be consumed on the premises, or any fire pit.

Any grill or fire pit shall be constructed and operated in a safe manner and shall not be located closed than 20 feet to any building, structure or property line.

The fire chief of one of the local fire departments shall be consulted to inspect a structure in the event there is a question of safety. A copy of the entire ordinance is available on the Duryea Borough website duryeaborough.com.



The Duryea Borough Street Department has scheduled an electronic recycling collection on Wednesday, Sept. 18.

Residents are to place their electronic recyclables at the curb by 7 a.m. Any small items, such as pagers, telephones, modems, should be placed in a blue recycling container. Large items, such as televisions and computers, can just be placed at the curb without a container.

Items that are acceptable are answering machines, CD players, all computer components, radios, scanners, tape players, word processors, VCR’s, camcorders, copiers, fax machines, microwaves, cell phones, telephones, pagers, remote controls, stereos, televisions, typewriters. Non-acceptable items are console televisions, air conditioners, air purifiers, batteries, blenders, curling irons, coffee pots, de-humidifiers, drills, electric can openers, fans, humidifiers, hair dryers, hot plates, irons, lamps, lawn mowers, razors, satellite dishes, space heaters, toaster ovens, toasters, window fans, sweepers. Please note that console televisions will no longer acceptable for the electronic recycling collection.
