Pittston Area’s Tara Johnson was the top finisher in the girls race at the Lackawanna County Commissioner’s Championships last Saturday at Dade Park in Scranton.

Johnson ran a time of 19:08, a full 20 seconds ahead of the field. That gave Pittston Area a second-place finish to Wallenpaupack. Eastin Ashby finished ninth.

On the boys side, Pittston Area’s Mike Harvilla posted a seventh-place finish by running a 17:04. Pittston Area did not have enough competitors to join in on the team score.


Tara Johnson and Eastin Ashby led an onslaught of Pittston Area girls cross country runners to a sweep of the field Wednesday at Kirby Park.

Also in the top 10 for the Patriots were Arcanna Bacardi, Abbie Sherrer and Megan Murtha. Wyoming Area failed to pick up a win.

On the boys side, Mike Haurilla ran an 18:01 for fourth place, followed by Vince Shea’s 18:11 to lead Pittston Area Wednesday at Kirby Park. That gave the Patriots a win over Wyoming Seminary, and a pair of losses.

Wyoming Area’s Brandon Chackon finished sixth. The Warriors beat Sem 24-31, while falling to Coughlin and Holy Redeemer.

Allie Barber had three goals and one assist in the Patriots win Friday.

The Warriors had one goal from Alee Petit.

Down 1-0 in the first the Patriots came back to defeat the Bulldogs on the road Wednesday.

Allie Barber recorded a goal and an assist in the win.

Just like that, with a stroke of genius and a little bit of bad luck, Pittston Area’s two-goal lead quickly became erased. Two Crestwood goals in a matter of 37 seconds created a whirlwind of problems for the Patriots going into halftime.

Fortunately for the Patriots, it still had more offense left in its tank in a chilly Monday night game in Wright Township. Pittston Area scored two goals and held off another late rally to post a 4-3 victory over the Comets.

“They were resilient,” Pittston Area coach Nicole Tieso said. “It was exciting. I couldn’t be happier with them as a team.”

Pittston Area’s Madison Mimnaugh scored the go-ahead goal in the 48th minute when she handled an Allie Barber corner kick and blasted it into the net.

Alexa Austin and Hifza Saeed each took a win in singles, while the team of Dasiy Cabral and Bookre Malore took the win in doubles to earn Hazleton Area the close win Friday.

Wyoming Area was led by a singles win from Kiersten Grillo, and a doubles win from Julia Banas and Lauren Perry.

MMI Prep 5

Stephanie Pudish won 12 of the 13 games played in her singles match, while Claire Sheen rallied from a set down as MMI Prep posted a 5-0 sweep of Pittston Area in WVC girls tennis play Thursday.

Jessica Smith and Kelsy Donaldson lost just four games in their doubles victory.

The Cougars went 2-1 in singles action and undefeated in doubles action to earn the win over Pittston Area Wednesday.

Elaina Menichelli eared the win for Pittston Area in singles.

Wyoming Area 3

Berwick 2

Kiersten Grillo was the lone singles winner for the Warriors in a win against Berwick Tuesday.

Julia Banas and Lauren wrapped up a 6-1, 6-2 win, while Sam Williams and Maddie Ambruso won a second set tie break to secure Wyoming Area’s win.

Sally DeLuca, Bree Bednarski and Grace Angelella recorded a goal and an assist each in the Wyoming Area victory Wednesday.

Grace Farrell assisted on both Del Val goals.

Berwick 2

Kasey Rood and Ky Welsh scored one goal apiece to lead Berwick to a shutout victory over Pittston Area Tuesday.

Pittston Area outshot Berwick 12-8. Liz Baiera had two saves in goal for Pittston in the loss.

Vanessa Parsons scored a pair of first-half goals to lead Dallas to a 2-0 victory over Wyoming Area on Monday in Wyoming Valley Conference field hockey action.

Wyoming Area goalie Christina Granteed made three saves.

Courtney Melvin shot a 41 to grab medalist honors for the winning Warriors as Wyoming Area defeated Wyoming Seminary 178-193 at Fox Hill Country Club on Thursday.

Wyoming Area’s Maddy Wharton shot a 43, while Gavin Kross (45) and Ryan Wrubel (49) rounded out the field.

Medalist Justin Brojakowski led all golfers with a 41 to lift the Mountaineers to the win at Irem Temple Country Club Thursday.

Tyler McGarry and Braulio Garcia each shot a 45 to top the Patriots.

Courtney Melvin earned medalist honors with a 44 and Tony Saita also shot a 44 in the Warriors’ win in a tri-meet match Wednesday.

The Grenadiers were led by a 51 from Eric Krzywicki, while the Mohawks were led by a 54 from Bill Norton.

Sean Soltysiak shot a two-over 37 to lead Tunkhannock to a victory over Pittston Area Tuesday.

Tyler McGarry shot a 42 to lead Pittston Area in the loss. David Zydko (45), Braulio Garcia (49) and Trent Woodruff (51) rounded the scoring for the Patriots.
