EXETER — Members of the Pittston High School Class of 1965 gathered for the 50th anniversary of their high school graduation on Aug. 21 at Fox Hill Country Club.
Fifty-three classmates of the class’s 144 members enjoyed an ideal mid-summer evening. Twenty-three of the graduates are deceased.
During the cocktail hour, not many classmates were seated as everyone mingled while catching up with each other.
“There were a few classmates that we hadn’t seen at all since graduation and a lot commented on Facebook that they wish they had attended earlier reunions,” said Rosie Zwarycz Massara.
Joe Sperrazza, Harding, hadn’t been to a reunion in 25 years while living in Pittsburgh and Maryland and working for the Department of Defense. Now retired, Sperrazza said he had a great time reminiscing with friends from days gone by.
Chester Sobuta, Hughestown, has worked in investments for most of his career. “It’s a nice experience because you go through school with all of these people, which was a wonderful experience to go to school 50 years ago and it’s nice to see them again because it was a wonderful relationship,” Sobuta said.
Sobuta has attended most of the class’s reunions. “A lot of classmates live locally and we get together; it’s nice,” he said.
Classmates were able to participate in the 32nd Annual Tomato Festival Parade held the next day and a school bus was supplied for members who wanted to attend. “We had to be at the school for 8 a.m. to get on the bus for the parade,” Massara said. “It was so much fun; we had a great time on the bus. We have such witty people from our class.”
Massara has kept in touch with classmates by gathering phone numbers, email addresses and postal addresses.
Classmates discussed meeting more frequently than every five years.
“We may meet every year or even for when many of us turn 70 in two years’ time,” Massara concluded.
“The 50th reunion is very special because we won’t make another 50,” Sobuta quipped.
