Avoca Borough Council applying for grant to spruce up its parks

AVOCA — Borough council members approved the motion to submit a request for a Luzerne County Recreation and Conservation Grant at their monthly meeting on Thursday.

The Luzerne County Council will decide how to distribute the $65,000 grant by judging the projects it will be used for.

Council members say they will use the grant to spruce up parks by planting trees, repairing a pavilion rooftop at the Plane Street Park, installing new fences at the Avoca Dupont Little League Field and acquiring a new scoreboard for the little league field at West Avoca Park.

The announcement for the grant will be made sometime in December.

In other business council:

• Announced that repairs to the traffic light on the intersection of Main and Hawthorne streets is almost completed. The light was damaged several months ago after it was struck by a tractor-trailer.

• Approved a renewal quote for the Avoca Volunteer Fire Department Insurance Premium at an annual premium of $10, 471 which is a $280 increase from last the previous policy. The new policy will be in effect from Dec. 12, 2015 until Dec. 12, 2016.

• Approved the TruGreen Renewal Quote of $1,072 to guarantee maintenance for all Avoca parks, which includes lawn service, grub control, fertilizers, weed control and crabgrass control from late spring into early fall of 2016.

• Hired Michael Volch as a new full time employee with the street department at an hourly rate of $12.25 per hour.
