Duryea Borough Council purchasing recycling bins for local parks

DURYEA — The borough may soon become more eco-friendly, as the council members decided Tuesday to apply for a grant to obtain recycling bins.

The money would come through the “Keep PA Beautiful” program.

Borough Manager Carolyn Santee said the bins would be for the local parks — Healey Park and the Community Park — but she isn’t sure how many each park would receive.

The hope is the bins will encourage more people to recycle.

“We don’t have recycle bins,” she said. “We only have garbage cans. I think it’s something we need.”

The council members also agreed to apply for a Local Share Account (LSA) grant toward additions to the street department building, which would include more space for the department’s trucks.

Santee didn’t have an exact number for the LSA grant, but estimated it would be anywhere between $245,000 and $275,000. She didn’t know how much the “Keep PA Beautiful” grant could be worth.

In other business…

• The council members approved the hiring of nine part-time police officers for the month of March.

• The council members approved the purchase and installation of new camera equipment at the municipal building.
