SENIOR CITIZENS’ NEWS: Health fair will be held Oct. 27 at Pittston Center

PITTSTON ACTIVE ADULT CENTER

Health Fair will be Oct. 27

PITTSTON — Wilkes University Nursing students will conduct a Health Fair at the Center beginning at 9 a.m. Tuesday. There will be blood pressure screenings as well as blood sugar testing and health educational information tables will be available. The event is open to the public. Door prizes will be chanced off at 10:30 a.m. and light refreshments will be available.

St. Mary’s Villa will conduct free glucose screenings from 11 a.m. to noon on Wednesday.

A Halloween Special Dinner will be held at noon on Friday. Reservations must be made by noon at least one day in advance. Asking donation for the dinner is $2 for members 60 years of age or older. The cost of the meal for those under 60 is $4.62. A Halloween party will be held from 12:30 to 3 p.m. Prizes will be awarded to the top three unique costumes. George Rittenhouse will entertain from 1 to 3 p.m. for dancing and listening pleasure. Cost of the party is $3. Light refreshments will be served.

APPRISE COUNSELORS are now taking appointments for Medicare Part D Open Enrollment Period. Anyone wishing to have their current prescription plan reviewed may Connie or Hazel at the Center at 570-655-5561 to set up an appointment.

Reservations are open for the following trips through the Pittston Active Adult Center:

Monday, Nov. 2 – Sands Casino. Cost is $25 which includes motorcoach transportation, $20 free play and $5 food voucher. There are two seats available.

Wednesday, Nov. 18 — American Music Theater

Exercise classes are offered at the center at 9 a.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Healthy Steps classes with Ruth and Catherine are held at 11 a.m. on Tuesdays. Sit and Be Fit chair exercise classes with Sandi are held at 9 a.m. on Thursdays. There is no charge for these classes. Zumba Gold classes with Tony are held from 1:30 to 2:15 p.m. on Tuesdays. Cost per class is $2.

Bridge players interested in forming a bridge club may contact Connie Kokinda at 570-655-5561. The club would meet Wednesday and/or Friday afternoons.

The center now offers ballroom dance lessons with Joseph Kull, instructor. Classes are from 2 to 3 p.m. on Thursdays. Cost per class is $2 per person and class size is limited.

Pitch games will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The center is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Free coffee is available from 8:30 a.m. to closing.

FALLS ACTIVE ADULT CENTER

Lunch & Learn on Oct. 29

EXETER TWP. — Lunch & Learn will be held at 12:15 p.m. on Thursday with Mary McHale Parrs, RD from CEO to discuss “Label Reading.” Parrs will also conduct a healthy taste-testing after her presentation.

A masquerade party will be held on Friday.

Book Club will meet from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Nov. 2 to discuss “Orphan Train” by Christina Baker Kline.

The following activities are available throughout the week to anyone ages 50 and older at the Falls Active Adult Center:

Mondays: 10:30 a.m. to noon, Craft Club meets. Many projects are offered with all supplies provided.

Tuesdays: Brain games at lunch. Bingo following lunch.

Wednesdays: 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. Walking group meets, weather permitting. Nutrition tips at lunch.

Thursdays: Nutrition talks at lunch. Bingo will be held following lunch.

Fridays: 9:30 a.m. to noon Geocaching activity, weather permitting. Free Zumba Gold from 9:15 to 10 a.m.

The Falls Active Adult Center recently started the Garden Project. Anyone interested in gardening is welcome to participate. The group meets on Wednesdays.

Anyone wishing to join the Falls Active Adult Center for a hot meal each day at noon for a suggested donation of $2 for those 60 and over and $4.62 for those under 60 should call Twila at 570-388-2623 by 12:30 p.m. the day before.

EXETER — A trip is being planned to Sands Casino for Thursday, Nov. 19. Pickups are in Exeter and Pittston. Non-members are welcome. Call Johanna at 570-655-2720 for reservations and information.

ST. JOSEPH’S SENIOR SOCIAL CLUB

Christmas Party will be Dec. 9

PITTSTON — The St. Joseph’s Social Senior Club Christmas party will be held at Fox Hill Country Club on Wednesday, Dec. 9. More details will be available at the next meeting.
