The chance for rain is expected to return tonight and persist in the Wyoming Valley as the holiday weekend approaches.

The National Weather Service indicated it was 55 degrees as of 6:54 a.m. at the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport, and fair skies were reported.

Partly sunny skies are expected today, with a high near 71.

Mostly cloudy skies will follow into tonight, along with rain likely into the overnight hours and into Thursday morning. Up to a quarter of an inch of rain is possible, and tonight’s low will be around 54.

Thursday will bring an 80 percent chance of rain before 1 p.m., followed by showers likely and a possible thunderstorm after 1 p.m. Up to a half an inch of rain is possible, and Thursday’s high will be near 63.

Showers are expected to persist into Thursday night, with another half an inch of rain possible. The low will be around 56.

Cloudy skies will round out the week on Friday, along with a 50 percent chance of showers. The high will be near 71.

Mostly cloudy skies are predicted for Friday night, with a low around 54.
