WVC Softball: Battery sparks Hazleton Area win

WEST PITTSTON — Wyoming Area shook up its batting order a bit, but it failed to rattle Hazleton Area pitcher Celine Podlesney or catcher Hope Kinney on Friday.

Podlesney got out a big jam in the second inning — with a huge assist from battery-mate Kinney — as Hazleton Area defeated the Warriors 5-3 in a battle of defending Wyoming Valley Conference softball divisional champions.

Hazleton Area, the defending Division 1 champion, improved to 7-0 and distanced itself farther from second place Wyoming Valley West (4-2). Wyoming Area (4-3), the defending Division 2 champ, lost ground to Nanticoke (5-1) and Tunkhannock (4-1).

“We have Celine and we have Hope. Those two have been a duo for a few years,” Hazleton Area first-year coach Heather Dale said. “They can sort of read and understand what’s going on. They have a great defense behind them and have been in situations like this, so they’re ready. They don’t get nervous under pressure. I think they like it.”

Wyoming Area’s three runs were the most scored against Hazleton Area all season. The Warriors, though, looked like they would get a bunch in the second inning.

Gwen Glatz and Grace Gober opened the Wyoming Area second with consecutive base hits. Jess Parente then reached on a sacrifice bunt to load the bases with no out. Vicky Remley followed and made it 1-0 with a single up the middle.

The potential big inning, though, fizzled out. Podlesney got a strikeout and Kinney picked off one runner and threw out another attempting to steal to keep the damage to one run. Kinney recorded both outs at third base.

“It just kind of happens,” Kinney said of the pickoff. “Me and my teammates at third base and first base, we make eye contact. It just comes to you.”

Hazleton Area didn’t squander its chance at a big inning, scoring four runs in the fourth. Megan Trivelpiece, Kinney and Podlesney led off the inning with consecutive singles. Taylor Kost and Katie Johnson later knocked in runs with singles. Another scored on an error and another when Erika Book crossed the plate on a wild pitch.

The Cougars grouped five of their 11 hits in the fourth inning, with none being hit particularly hard. The softball just found spaces in the defense. Podlesney finished off the scoring with an RBI single in the seventh, plating Trivelpiece.

“They hit the ball where we weren’t in that inning with those short hits,” Wyoming Area coach John McNeil said. “That shows a sign of maturity. They knew what they had to do. That’s it.”

Podlesney allowed just three hits after the second, including an RBI double by Heather Nametko in the fifth and an RBI single by Kristi Skok in the seventh.

“You just keep your composure that’s the biggest thing,” Podlesney said. “They get a couple hits and you can’t get all riled up, get all worked up. You have to keep it calm, keep it cool and get the outs.”
