The District 16 and District 31 Major Baseball championships began this past week and will run through July 14 when championship games will be played on July 14 at Pittston Township Little League.

Pool play began on Monday, June 29. Due to weather, games have been moved around throughout the tournament. There was a full slate of games on Saturday, July 4, which were not available as of press time.

Here are the results of this past week’s games:

DISTRICT 16

Pittston City 7

Avoca/Dupont 6

Adam Penxa doubled twice and struck out six to pick up the win on the mound as Pittston City edged Avoca/Dupont 7-6 on Thursday in District 16 Little League Major Baseball play on July 2.

Steve Yanchis homered for Pittston City while Andrew Skutack went 3-for -4 with a double and Ethan Ghannam was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI.

Chris Urbanski finished 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI for Avoca/Dupont. Will Aldrich went 2 for 3.

Pittston Township 8

North Wilkes-Barre 2

On July 2. Pittston Township took down North Wilkes-Barre, 8-2, and improved to 2-0 in pool play action.

Pittston Township 18

South Wilkes-Barre 4

Pat Bennie cracked a single and a home run, Andrew Gallia had a single and a double and P.J. Pisano registered three hits on the night in Pittston Township’s four-inning win on Monday, June 29.

Kameron Taylor had a two-run home run as well as a single, Blake Bymon hit a double and Tyler Hoedel finished the night with a single for South Wilkes-Barre.

Plains 14

Jenkins Township 4

Matt Johnson hit a home run for Jenkins Township while Braden Powers led the team in the field with a diving catch in right-center as the locals fell to Plains on June 29.

Darren Clarke hit two of Plains’ five home runs in a four-inning victory. Clarke finished with five RBI and also struck out seven to earn the win on the mound. Matt Egidio, Dante Vitali and Evan Taylor also homered for Plains.

Hanover Area 10

Pittston City 0

Todd Kolbicka (triple, two RBI) and Jamie Cunard (three RBI) had two hits apiece for Hanover Area on June 29. Brenden Behm doubled and drove in a pair.

Phil Gristina, Cole Ferranti and Eric Tisark all had hits for Pittston City.

DISTRICT 31

West Pittston 5

West Side 4

On July 2, West Pittston scored a 5-4 win over West Side, improving to 1-1 in pool play action.

Kingston/Forty Fort 8

Wyoming/West Wyoming 4

The pitching combination of Ian Bayo and Scott Alison proved to be too much for Wyoming/West Wyoming on , July 2.

The two struck out a combined eight batters. Kevin McNulty had two singles while Bayo, Ryan Stevens and Anthony Severns each had singles of their own for KFF.

Riley Rusyn had a single and a double at the plate, J.T. Gober hit a double and Adam Wisnewski had a two-run home run for Wyoming/West Wyoming.

Wyoming/West Wyoming 3

West Pittston 2

The pitching combination of Riley Rusyn, who got the win, and Tyler Harden, who was credited with the save, helped Wyoming/West Wyoming to hang onto a 3-2 victory over West Pittston on June 29.

J.T. Gober, Thad Erzar, Jayden Rusyn and Owen Hizynski all had singles for Wyoming/West Wyoming and Kevin Jumper and Evan Melberger each singled for West Pittston.
