Greater Pittston was scheduled to begin play in the Pennsylvania Region 5 American Legion Senior Baseball Tournament at Central Columbia Saturday.

The tournament continues through Wednesday.

Greater Pittston, which qualified as the second-place team from the Wyoming Valley, was paired with West Branch representative Hughesville in Saturday’s opener of the eight-team, double-elimination event.

All teams were scheduled to play once Saturday and will play once again Sunday when the field will be trimmed to six teams.

A loss Saturday would put Greater Pittston in the Sunday noon elimination game against the Bloomsburg-South Scranton loser.

The rest of the field includes: Wyoming Valley champion Nanticoke, District 11 runner-up Dickson City, Susquehanna Valley League champion Line Mountain and Susquehanna Valley runner-up Sunbury/Northumberland.

The Youth Legion tournament does not follow a true geographic breakdown for its “regional” competition. Greater PIttston qualified by winning the Wyoming Valley title and will begin regional play in the Philadelphia suburbs at Southampton July 25. The tournament concludes July 29.
