Greater Pittston Youth American Legion baseball ends on regional level

Greater Pittston Youth American Legion baseball ended on the regional level for the second straight season.

The Wyoming Valley League champions went 1-2 in the Southampton Regional, one of four events in the eastern half of the state.

Greater Pittston 4

Mifflin 1

Matt Wright threw a three-hitter and struck out five when Greater Pittston opened the tournament July 25 with a 4-1 victory over Mifflin.

Greater Pittston got off to a quick start when C.J. Pisack, Dylan Spurlin and Dylan Melberger all drove in runs in the three-run first inning.

Melberger and Anthony Nardell finished with two hits each.

Norchester 4

Greater Pittston 2

Norchester scored three times in the sixth inning to down Greater Pittston, 4-2, in the winners’ bracket semifinal July 26.

Greater Pittston had 11 hits but only managed the two runs.

Melberger went the distance on the mound, striking out nine while also providing three hits to the offense.

Spurlin had a single, double and both runs scored.

Wright also had two hits.

Southampton 9

Greater Pittston 8

Host Southampton eliminated Greater Pittston, 9-8, Monday.

Mikey Bonita led the offense with three hits, including a double, and three stolen bases in the loss. Alex McAndrew added a single and a triple.
