Local roundup: Wyoming Area girls have successful week on tennis courts

Although Wyoming Area doesn’t have its own courts, the girls tennis team is off to another hot start to open the 2015 season.

The Warriors went 2-1 on the week with a pair of sweeps.

Wyoming Area took down Hanover Area, 5-0, on Wednesday and rounded out the week with another 5-0 win over GAR on Friday. In singles play, Wyoming Area’s Kierstin Grillo, Lauren Perry and Anna Thomas each won both matches in straight sets. The doubles teams of Emily Cheskiewicz/Lea Getz and Nina Minnelli/Melanie Wrubel earned wins against GAR.

Against Hazleton Area on Monday, Pittston Area fell, 3-2. Anna Thomas was the lone singles player to win. Cheskiewicz and Getz picked up a doubles win.

MMI Prep 4

Pittston Area 1

Jessica Smith, Libby Pinto and Cate Matyas swept singles play for the visiting Preppers, all winning in straight sets on Tuesday.

Lauren Matyas and Jackie Braunstein went three sets to beat the Patriots’ MacKenzie Connors and Emi Patel at No. 1 doubles.

Hazleton Area 0

Luchia Carabetta opened the scoring in the 13th minute and added an assist less than five minutes later when Pittston Area defeated Hazleton Area on Tuesday.

Mia Barbieri, Megan Florio, Grace Mimnaugh and Sam Mayers scored the other goals. Grace Mimnaugh, Jordan Levandoski, Carabetta and Kayla Hogan had assists.

Taryn Ashby had three saves in the win for Pittston Area, which led in shots, 21-3.

Coughlin at Wyoming Area, 4 p.m.

Coughlin shut out Wyoming Area with the help of goals from Sam Sebia and Junior Martinez on Tuesday.

Despite the loss, Wyoming Area Goaltender David Klaproth made 22 saves during the contest.

Wyoming Valley West 8

Pittston Area 1

Mike Bazadona scored four goals and tallied one assist as Wyoming Valley West rolled in a win over Pittston Area on Wednesday.

Hunter Maxwell added a goal and an assist of his own for the Spartans.

Michael Mikitish scored the Patriots’ lone goal.

Pittston Area 189

Shane Angle shot a 2-over-par, 37 at Fox Hill Country Club to lead unbeaten Crestwood past winless Pittston Area, 168-189.

John McGroarty added a 43 while Tyler Papura and Mike Golden shot 44 each for the Comets (7-0).

Jeff Donnora led Pittston Area with a 42. Allie Craig added a 44.

Wyoming Area 178

Berwick 185

Anthony Shaver, Gavin Kross and Nick Athmann shot 43s to lead Wyoming Area to a win over Berwick on Tuesday at Fox Hill Country Club.

Ryan Wrubel added a 49.

VOLLEYBALL

MMI Prep 0

Rachael Solano led Wyoming Area with five service points and 25 assists as they defeated MMI Prep 25-11, 25-18 and 25-14 on Thursday.

Jess Sorick had five aces, seven kills and two blocks while Megan Wysocki finished with six aces and five kills for the Warriors.

Crestwood 3

Pittston Area 0

Pittston Area’s Marley O’Brien had nine kills and 16 digs, while Anna McDermott finished with 25 digs in the Patriots loss to Crestwood on Thursday.

Kirsten Durling had 11 assists.

Wyoming Area 1

Jessica Sorick finished with 14 kills for Wyoming Area, and teammates Nicole Wright and Megan Wysocki added seven aces in a loss to Crestwood on Tuesday.

Set scores were 25-22, 25-27, 25-22 and 25-18.

Holy Redeemer 3

Pittston Area 0

Lauren Slavoski provided 12 kills, 13 points and two aces, Amanda Curcio added 10 kills and two points and Kassie Schinski contributed three kills and 15 points as Holy Redeemer swept Pittston Area on Tuesday.
