HUGHESTOWN — It all came down to singles.

Thanks to Wyoming Area’s top three players, the Warriors were able to pick up a closely-contested win, 3-2, over rival Pittston Area on Wednesday in Hughestown.

Kierstin Grillo, Lauren Perry and Anna Thomas each picked up straight set victories for the Warriors. Grillo was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Sara Swartz. Perry was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Jess Borget. Thomas was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Taryn Whitman.

The win moves Wyoming Area to 8-1 and back on pace for last year’s school record mark of 11-2 when the Warriors made the district championships for the first time.

“It’s really exciting,” Callaio said about the start of the season. “My singles girls have been playing well. That’s why we are having such a good start.”

Pittston Area got a pair of singles win to get on the board.

Mackenzie Connors and Emi Patel took down Emily Cheskiewicz and Lea Getz with a 10-8 tiebreaker in the third set. The team of Madison Stanton and Breanna Yackbus defeated Nina Minnelli and Melanie Wrubel, 6-4, 6-1.

The Warriors have been practicing at courts in Harding because of the Wyoming Area courts being condemned. Their home matches are at the Pittston Area courts in Hughestown.

“So far it’s been crazy but the girls are great about everything,” Callaio said. “We have a couple tough matches coming up so I think they need to just play within themselves.”

Wyoming Area will travel to perennial power Holy Redeemer this week.
