Wyoming Area basketball player Vanessa Stella was named the Sunday Dispatch Athlete of the Week for the second week of December.
Stella and the Warriors entered their final preseason game winless and a matchup with Hanover on the horizon. Stella made a trio of three-pointers and scored a game- and career-high 18 points as Wyoming Area got its first win of the season, 55-41.
The Seton Catholic boys basketball team suffered an 88-66 loss at the hands of Meyers.
Meyers took a five-point lead in the first quarter on the Eagles’ home court and never looked back. Mike Ostrowski and Matt Golden each scored a team-high 15 points for Seton Catholic. Al Zangardi reached double figures with 10 points.
Pittston Area’s boys basketball team used a balanced attack to take down Tunkhannock, 74-57 at a game played at Pittston Area High School.
Matt Zaleski led the PA victory effort with 23 points. Center Pat Walker tallied 21, while forward Lou Sciandra finished with 13 points.
Mark Rostkowski scored a game-high 23 points as Pittston Area basketball improved to 5-1 with an 86-58 win over St. John’s.
Rostkowski scored 20 points in the first half for the Gene Guarilia-coached squad. Mark’s twin brother, Mike, scored 11 points in the second half and 15 for the game. Chick Andrewscavage chipped in with 10 points, while Charlie Dominick came off the bench to score eight points.
Sophomore guard Billy Joyce led the Johnnies with 11 points. Joe Dorbad tallied nine points, while Larry Pellegrini tossed in eight.
