KUTZTOWN — Liz Mikitish, a 2013 Pittston Area graduate and Kutztown University junior, was recently named to the 2015 ZAG/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division 2 Scholars of Distinction team.

Golden Bears achieving a 3.9 or higher were named to the team. Mikitish was joined by five other teammates. Each of the six Golden Bears were also part of Kutztown University’s 16 selections to the National Academic Squad. The National Academic Squad recognizes those student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher through the first semester of the 2015-16 academic year.

Mikitish is a two-time Scholar of Distinction and a three-time National Academic Squad winner. She’s a five-time dean’s list honoree.

Kutztown earned the NFHCA’s Team Award with the highest GPA among Division 2 programs at 3.54. It is the 12th consecutive year that KU has been recognized with a Team Award. The National Academic Team Award recognizes those institutions that achieved a minimum Team GPA of 3.0 during the first semester of the 2015-16 academic year.

In 2015, Kutztown field hockey returned to the playoffs and hosted its first-ever home playoff game. KU finished with a 12-7 record, 7-3 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, and improved its win total for the third straight year. KU had an eight-game winning streak and had five student-athletes earn All-PSAC honors and three celebrate All-America distinction
