The baseball season for Pittston Area finished when the Patriots were beaten, 3-2 by Jersey Shore, in the PIAA Class 3A first round game at Bowman Field in Williamsport.
Jersey Shore put 11 men on base in the first three innings to score its three runs of starting pitcher George Dructor. Dructor later settled down and retired 10 of the last 12 hitters and didn’t allow a hit after the third.
June 1996
Heidi Van Leuven, of Pittston, was awarded the Wyoming Valley YABA 1996 Tournament All Events Champion for Class B girls.
Van Leuven and her partner also placed first in the doubles tournament and her team took second place in the Mixed B division. Van Leuven was a member of the Modern Lanes Youth Bowling League.
June 1986
Wyoming Area senior Marv Gilpin, a two-way starter for Paul Marranca’s football Warriors, announced he will continue his athletic career at East Stroudsburg University.
Gilpin, a 6-2, 240-pound co-captain, was a defensive end and tight end for the 8-3 Warriors in the 1985 season. He earned all-conference status in his junior and senior seasons.
June 1976
The Junction teener baseball team beat Avoca to rack up its fifth straight win in the Greater Pittston Teeners Baseball League. The win put the Junction at 5-2, one game behind Old Forge.
Ed Leyshon had three hits, including a three-run home run for the winners. Dave Clifford had three hits, while Don Kridlo had two. Mike Tigue was the winning pitcher.
