Duryea VFW’s major boys little league team ended the season on a high not with a 13-11 win over the West Pittston Moose. VFW scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth to come back and pick up the win.
Brandon Pernot went 4-for-4 and picked up the win on the mound. Tyler Loftus had three hits, while Chucky Bressler and two triples. Matt Gromelski, Eddie Klein, Andrew Mies and Aaron Black all provided singles. Tyler Lutecki had three hits including a triple.
For the Moose, Joe Adonizio had two hits.
June 1996
Lisa Bukowski and Jessica Soy each won medals at the Pennsyulvania State Special Olympics held at Penn State University.
In track, Bukowski, from Avoca, won three medals. She won gold in the 200-meter run, a silver in the 400-meter run and a bronze medal in the 100-meter run.
Soy, from Duryea, won two bronze medals in the swimming competitions. She won her medals in the 100-meter freestyle and the 50-meter backstroke. She also took fifth in the 50-meter freestyle. Both were juniors at Pittston Area.
June 1986
At the 55th annual John A. Allan golf tournament at Fox Hill Country Club, the team of Dan Pavlico and Joe Weiscarger were one of four teams to advance to the semifinals.
The duo, considered underdogs going into the tournament, defeated Bob Gill and Brian Corbett in the first 18-hold match in the morning round of the second day. The team then proceeded to defeate Takey Alexander and John Olsewski in the afternoon round.
Other teams in the finals were Michael Chomicz and Ed Karpovitch, Art Brunn and Wally Kuharchik, and Sandy LaFoca and Ted Tryba.
June 1976
The Greater Pittston legion baseball team clinched the first half championship of the Wyoming Valley Legion Baseball League with a 12-4 win over North End of Wilkes-Barre.
Harry Ardoline pitched and hit the locals to the win, who improved to 8-2. Ardoline scattered three hits and finished his offensive day with three hits, including a pair of doubles and four RBI. Homer LoPresto, Tom Puscavage and Don Casey each added two hits in the Greater Pittston win.
