HUGHESTOWN — One Pittston Area junior baseball league team finished the season 13-0 and won the District 16 regular season championship. The next step is making a run at the all-star title.
Pittston Area No. 1 finished off Pittston Area No. 3 to win the title in a special championship game held Sunday, June 26 at the Pittston Area Middle School. Pittston Area No. 1 finished the season perfect thanks to final week wins against Avoca/Dupont and North Wilkes-Barre.
In the title game, Pittston Area No. 1 needed two runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull out an 11-10 win over the rivals.
Andrew Krawczk, Michael Nocito and Tyler Granahan each finished with three hits. Nocito and Granahan each had two RBI. As a team, Pittston Area No. 1 stole 17 bases. Gino Mariggi, Nocito and Granahan pitched to help secure the win.
Granahan pitched the final three innings allow no runs.
Up next for three local junior league teams will be the District 16 and 31 championships, which start Tuesday, July 5.
In a six-team double elimination bracket, Pittston Area opens play by hosting Hanover at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. Avoca/Dupont/Pittston City will then travel to play the winner of that game at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, July 7.
Should either local team make it, the first title game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Thursday, July 14. The second title game, if necessary, will be the following day.
GWA to battle for D31 title
In the District 31 Junior League championship, Greater Wyoming Area is part of a three-team tournament, which begins Friday, July 8 when the locals host Back Mountain at 5:30 p.m.
The winner of the opener will then host Kingston/Forty Fort/West Side/Swoyersville at 1 p.m. Sunday, July 10. The tournament is double elimination and the first title game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Thursday, July 14. The second title game, if necessary, will be the following day.
