HUGHESTOWN — Pittston Area’s offense has carried it through the first leg of the District 16 Senior Baseball Championships. In the title game, it was their pitcher and some defense who kept the opponent at bay.
Pittston Area’s Kyle Ralston picked up the win as the locals beat South Wilkes-Barre, 12-3, to win the District 16 championship and advance to the Section 5 tournament, schedule for the upcoming week.
Jonathon Bone led Pittston Area with three hits. Adding to the offensive attack were Colton Zafuto, Matthew Starinsky, Phil Cocco, Dominic Stella and Jonathan Winters. To save a few runs, Jordan Powers, playing right field, threw out two runners at home plate.
Pittston Area started the championships with a 10-0 win over South Wilkes-Barre. Later, the locals took care of Plains, 16-5, to advance to the championship game.
In the District 31 finals, Greater Wyoming Area fell to Back Mountain, 11-2.
The Section 5 tournament begins Wednesday, July 6 and consists of teams from District 16, 17, 31 and 32. The tournament is double elimination. The winner of Section 5 will play the winner of Section 8 in the state tournament.
