The West Pittston Tropical Dreams Team finished the West Pittston Minor League Girls Softball season unbeaten with a mark of 13-0. The team was coached by Mike Bonita, John Turner and Kevin Heidacavage.
Members of the team were Lexie Sokach, Danielle Harper, Dakota Eifert, Courtney Melvin, Nicole Turner, Abigail Thornton, Elyssa Yanik, Tyler Bonita, Afton Francik, Stephanie Sokach, Carly Sokach, Sally DeLuca and Audrey Heidacavage.
August 1996
Duryea American Legion topped West Pittston Pagnotti, 9-4, to win the Savo’s Tournament of Champions after a two-week long tournament which featured the champions of each of the eight local Little League organizations.
In the championship game, Duryea’s Greg Ratchford had a two-run double and Ed Gromelski drove in two runs. Chris Sobeski was the winning pitcher for Duryea. Matt Mattei and Andy Castanaro had two hits each for Pagnotti.
August 1986
The Greater Pittston Teener Baseball team fell to East End National, 13-3, in the championship game of the Wilkes-Barre Recreation Board Teeners League Tournament.
After spotting East End two runs in the first, Greater Pittston’s Dave Fritz hit a run-scoring double. One out later, Ernie Angelella’s fielder’s choice brought home Sean Hannon. East End put the game away with six runs in the fourth and four in the fifth.
Don Piragas had an RBI single in the fourth inning.
August 1976
The Sunday Dispatch awarded six student-athletes for their outstanding athletic and academic prowess.
Winning the awards were Wyoming Area’s Sandy Selenski, St. John’s Susan Brown, Pittston Area’s Rose Musto, Wyoming Area’s Paul Rushefski, Pittston Area’s Michael Lokuta and St. John’s Joseph LoBrutto. The students were selected by a committee comprised of teachers, coaches and administrators.
