YATESVILLE — It was a healthy start to the 2016 girls tennis season for local teams.
Both Pittston Area and Wyoming Area won their opening matches of the season against Coughlin thanks to some solid play from each the singles and doubles players.
The Patriots started the season with a 4-1 win over the Crusaders on Wednesday. Abby Connors and Taryn Whitman won in singles play and the Patriots swept doubles to earn the victory.
Connors won 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 at No. 2 singles and Whitman swept at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-1. The team of Breanna Yashkus and Madison Stanton won their doubles match 6-0, 6-1. Kerry Shamanski and Emi Patel also made quick work of their Coughlin opponents 6-1, 6-1.
For Wyoming Area, the top three singles players all won matches on Friday.
Briana Pizzano won the No. 1 singles match 6-4, 6-2 over Coughlin’s Diana Rodriguez. At No. 2 singles, Allison Lampman was a 6-1, 6-1 winner. Lea Getz got a 6-4, 6-2 win.
At doubles, Emily Cheskiewicz and Nina Minnelli came back to win 4-6, 6-0, 6-0.
Pittston Area will host Dallas on Monday, while Wyoming Area travels to Wyoming Seminary.
