In a battle between two of the hottest teams in the Wyoming Valley Conference, Pittston Area and Wyoming Area left nothing to chance on the tennis courts.
Both teams entered the arena with just one loss on the young season. In the end, it came down to the No. 2 singles match between Pittston Area’s Abby Connors and Wyoming Area’s Allison Lampman. Lampman would secure a three-set win to give Wyoming Area a 3-2 win Thursday in Hughestown.
The Warriors got three singles wins to earn the victory.
The win puts Wyoming Area at 4-1 and in a third-place tie with Wyoming Seminary in Class 2A. The loss drops Pittston Area to 3-2, a half game behind Hazleton Area in Class 3A.
Lampman and Connors traded sets to start their match. Lampman won the first by a score of 6-4. In the second set, Connors came back to get her own 6-4 win. In the third and deciding set, Lampman cruised to a 6-3 win.
At No. 1 singles, Wyoming Area freshman Brianna Pizzano took down Pittston Area’s Mackenzie Connors, 6-0, 6-0. The win puts Pizzano at 5-0 this season in league play. At the third singles, Wyoming Area’s Lea Getz beat Pittston Area’s Taryn Whitman, 6-2, 6-4.
Pittston Area was able to get wins in both doubles matches.
Breanna Yashkus and Madison Stanton were 6-4, 6-3 winners over Emily Cheskiewicz and Nina Minnelli. Charity Mcleod and Kerry Shamnoski took down Bella Scappaticci and Olivia Williams, 6-0, 6-3.
This coming week, Pittston Area will travel to Wyoming Valley West on Monday, while Wyoming Area hosts Berwick. The Dawgs are 5-0 in league play this season, while the Spartans are 0-5.

Nicole Joanlanne pulled out a tough 6-4, 6-0 victory in the top singles match, leading a singles sweep that carried the Blue Knights to victory on Tuesday.
Pittston Area’s No. 2 doubles team of Kerry Shamnoski and Charity Mcleod picked up the lone win for the Patriots.

Brianna Pizzano and Allison Lampman won the top two singles matches and Nina Minelli and Emily Cheskiewicz teamed to pulled out the top doubles match to lift the Warriors to victory on Tuesday.
