HUGHESTOWN — The Pittston Area girls soccer team started the season strong with a 3-0 win over Tunkhannock to open Wyoming Valley Conference play Wednesday at the Primary Center fields in Hughestown.

The Patriots got a pair of goals from Kaylee Copp to get the win. The Tigers were held to just two shots to help keeper Taryn Ashby secure the shutout.

Things didn’t go as well for the Patriots on Friday.

At Crestwood, the Patriots would fall, 8-4. Pittston Area’s Angelica Singer for the locals in the loss. The Patriots sit at 1-1 heading into the second week of play.

Mackenzie Love rattled the cages with five goals while Amanda Ayers added a goal and made three assists to spark the Black Knights.

Wyoming Area 9

Wyoming Seminary 1

Aleah Kranson and Erica Gallagher combined to score eight of Wyoming Area’s nine total goals in a victory over Wyoming Seminary on Thursday.

Alyssa Kristeller scored the Blue Knight’s lone goal of the day, assisted by Belle Tana.

BOYS SOCCER

Wyoming Area 3

Blue Ridge 2

Trailing 2-0 at halftime on Saturday, Sept. 3, Wyoming Area scored three unanswered goals to beat Blue Ridge, 3-2, in non-conference boys soccer action.

Brandon Williams, Brenden Lee and Casey Orlando each scored goals, while Eric Hall made six saves.

Tunkhannock 6

Pittston Area 1

Pittston Area’s Dominic Stella received an assist from Jordan Power in the 79th minute, but it was too late as the Patriots fell to Tunkhannock on Wednesday.

The Tigers scored four goals in the first half, and two in the second. Kyle Mildjeski had 11 saves for the Patriots.

Hazleton Area 5

Wyoming Area 4

Wyoming Area scored two goals in the first and second halves in a loss to Hazleton Area.

Damien Bronsburg, Ryan Shuleski, Gavin Lahart and Brandon Williams each cashed in for the Warriors. The Cougars scored four second-half goals to secure the win. Peter Butera had eight saves in the loss.

Pittston Area 1

Pittston Area’s Kirsten Durling had 15 assists, 3 kills and 2 blocks in the Patriots loss to Nanticoke on Tuesday. The Patriots took the first set, 25-14, before falling in the next three.

Emily O’Brien finished with 7 service points and four kills. Portia Weidlich had five kills in the loss. The games scores were: 25-14, 14-25, 7-25, 5-25.

Hanover Area 3

Wyoming Area 1

McKenna Reedy had 10 aces, 10 kills and 31 assists as the Hawkeyes won 25-18, 18-25, 25-23, 25-11. Kaitlin Bradford added 13 kills and 12 digs while Paige Jaslar had 10 service points.

The Warriors were led by Hunter Chervenitski (11 service points, 11 assists) and Brandi Sorokin (five aces, five kills).

Pittston Area 3

Tunkhannock 1

Kristen Durling served 13 points, including five aces, as the Patriots rebounded from a first game loss to take a 25-27, 25-20, 30-28, 25-18 victory on Thursday.

Durling added 11 assists in the win, while Scarlett Alexander finished with eight service points, including four aces. Portia Weidlich had six kills and served three aces in the victory.

The Royals swept Wyoming Area 25-6, 25-12, 25-11 on Thursday.

Wyoming Area’s Marissa Traglia finished with three kills and Liv Astolfi had 6 digs.

Kara Gearhart scored her second goal of the evening with 11:58 to play in overtime, lifting the Warriors to victory.

Grace Angelella put Wyoming Area on top with the game’s first score on an unassisted goal with 9:33 remaining in the first half. Gearhart tied it up with her first goal just 29 seconds into the second half, and Addy Ross scored to give Delaware Valley a 2-1 lead midway through the second half.

Emilie Wanko scored unassisted for the Warriors to send the game into overtime.

Honesdale 5

Pittston Area 1

Ally Meyer sealed the game with a second-half hat trick and Penn State commit Clayre Smith registered a goal and an assist to spark the Hornets.

Nina Cirelli scored just over five minutes in to give the Patriots and early lead, but Smith tied it on a penalty stroke later in the first half. Brooke Gardas finished with three assists for Honesdale.

Allie Craig picked up co-medalist honors with a 39 for Pittston Area’s first win of the season on Friday, Sept. 2.

Teammates Brandon Seamen and Dylan Burwell each shot a 40 for the Patriots. Wyoming Valley West’s Rob Lane and Marin Cryan were also co-medalists with Craig after shooting a 39.

Wyoming Area’s Jim Kosco fired a 38 at Fox Hill Country Club to lead the Warriors in a tight match with Crestwood. Nik Athmann, Ryan Wrubel and Chase Yochem each shot 43.

Hazleton Area 162

Allie Craig led Pittston Area with a 45 in a loss to Hazleton Area on Thursday at Fox Hill Country Club.

Brandon Seaman and Dylan Burwell each shot a 46.

Ryan Wrubel and Chase Yochem each shot a 43 at Irem Temple Country Club in a loss to Dallas on Thursday. Nik Athmann had a 45, while Cole Coolbaugh shot a 48.
