Local Sports Roundup: Wrubel, Warriors outlast Craig, Patriots in rematch on the links

In a rematch of earlier in the season, Wyoming Area was able to narrowly get past Pittston Area in Wyoming Valley Conference golf action on Monday at Fox Hill Country Club.

Wyoming Area’s Ryan Wrubel and Pittston Area’s Allie Craig each shot 42 as the Warriors came out with a two-stroke win, 179-181.

Nik Athmann (44), Jimmy Kosco (45) and Cole Coolbaugh (48) helped the Warriors to the narrow win. Matt Havrilla shot a 43, while Joe Carchilla shot 47.

The match was part of a three-team showing at Fox Hill. The Patriots also picked up a win against Coughlin, 181-186, while falling to Tunkhannock. The Warriors lost to Tunkhannock, 174-179.


Hazleton Area 1,

Wyoming Area 0

Hazleton Area’s Kacee Diehl scored in overtime to beat Wyoming Area on Monday.

Katie Wolfgang made 14 saves for the Warriors, who got 16 shots on Hazleton Area goalie Margaret Fulton.

Lake-Lehman 6,

Pittston Area 1

pittston Area’s Hannah Robbins scored the team’s lone goal in a loss to Lake-Lehman on Monday. The Patriots allowed four first-half goals to the Black Knights en route to the loss.

Robbins scored with five minutes left in the first half.


Patriots take three

Pittston Area had the top three finishers Wednesday, en route to victories over Wyoming Valley West, Lake-Lehman and Tunkhannock.

Pittston Area runner Nicole Zambetti broke the Valley West course record, finishing in 21:40. Arianna Boccardi and Bailey Loyack took second and third. Genny English was fifth, while Mary Silinski finished 10th in the Pittston Area triple win.

WA topples MMI Prep

Wyoming Area’s girls cross country team beat MMI Prep on Wednesday at Wyoming Seminary. The Warriors finished the day 1-2 with losses to Hazleton Area and Crestwood. The Warriors beat MMI 15-40.


Patriots take out Lehman

Pittston Area, behind a seventh place finish from Tony DeMark, took down Lake-Lehman on Wednesday. DeMark’s teammate, Joey Fisher, finished eighth.

Pittston Area beat the Black Knights 26-32. The Patriots fell to Tunkhannock and Wyoming Valley West.

Wyoming Area took down MMI Prep, 20-37, on Wednesday, and fell to Hazleton Area and Crestwood.


Berwick 3,

Wyoming Area 2

Wyoming Area’s Brianna Pizzano remained unbeaten in league play with a straight set win over Berwick’s Gabi Popko in a loss on Monday.

Emily Cheskiewicz and Nina Minnelli also won it straight sets for the Warriors second win of the day. The deciding match came when Lea Getz fell to Lily Force-Moore in three sets.

Pittston Area 4,

Wyoming Valley West 1

Pittston Area’s Mackenzie Connors and Taryn Whitman each won singles matches en route to a win against Wyoming Valley West on Monday.

At doubles, Breanna Yashkus and Madison Standon won in straight sets. Charity Mcleod and Kerry Shamnoski also picke dup an easy win.

Pittston Area 4,

Hanover Area 1

After watching Abby Connors go down in a tough 7-5, 7-5 No. 1 singles match to Hanover Area’s Victoria Hoffman, Pittson Area rallied to win the final four matches to secure a victory.

Between the two of them, Pittston Area singles players Mackenzie Connors and Taryn Whitman only lost a combined three games during their respective matches. Breanna Yashkus and Madison Stanton’s straight-set victory put the Patriots ahead for good.

Wyoming Area 3,

Dallas 2

Thanks to a strong day from its singles players, Wyoming Area was able to pull out a tightly contested victory Friday.

Three of the five matches took three sets to determine the outcome. Wyoming Area’s Allison Lampman and Lea Getz both overcame first-set losses to win their matches.
