WILKES-BARRE — Both Pittston Area and Wyoming Area’s girls tennis regular seasons are coming to a close, and the local teams are starting to heat up.

The Patriots and Warriors each got decisive wins during the past week. Both teams have one match to play, prior to the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association District 2 championships, which start on Oct. 6.

On Monday, Pittston Area’s Abby Connors, Mackenzie Connors and Taryn Whitman each won singles play as the Patriots dropped GAR, 5-0. Breanna Yashkus and Madison Stanton, along with Charity McLeod and Emi Patel, each won doubles matches for the sweep.

The Patriots (8-4) will head to MMI Prep on Tuesday, Oct. 4 to finish up the season. Currently, Pittston Area is in sixth place in the District 2 Class 3A race. A win against MMI should propel them to the team championships, as six teams qualify.

Also on Monday, Wyoming Area was a 4-1 winner of Crestwood to improve its record to 9-2 overall.

Brianna Pizzano took the No. 1 singles match 6-1, 6-0, while the duo of Emily Cheskiewicz and Nina Minnelli won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles.

Wyoming Area’s match with Holy Redeemer, originally scheduled for Friday, was postponed and will be made up within the next week. The Warriors (9-2) will head to the PIAA District 2 Class AA playoffs, which start next week. Currently, they sit in third place out of 20 teams in District 2.

FIELD HOCKEY

Wyoming Area 2, Tunkhannock 1

Victoria Braccini and Lauren Parente each scored in the first half to give Wyoming Area a close win over Tunkhannock on Monday. Kari Melberger and Grace Angelella had assists.

Katie Wolfgang had one save two Tunkhannock shots.

Wyoming Seminary 8, Pittston Area 1

Ali Dunn scored the lone goal for Pittston Area in a loss to Wyoming Seminary on Monday. Shelby Gardner made 15 saves for the Patriots.

Wyoming Valley West 9, Pittston Area 0

Pittston Area’s Shelby Gardner made an impressive 23 saves on 32 Wyoming Valley West shots in a loss to the Spartans on Wednesday.

Wallenpaupack 1, Wyoming Area 0

Wallenpaupack’s Alyssa Watson broke the tie three minutes into the overtime period in a win over Wyoming Area on Wednesday.

Wyoming Area’s Katie Wolfgang made 10 saves in the loss.

VOLLEYBALL

Pittston Area 3, GAR 0

Pittston Area’s Kirsten Durling had 17 assists, four aces and one kill as the Patriots improved to 5-4 and six alone in sixth place in the PIAA District 2 Class 3A on Wednesday.

Portia Weidlich had six aces and six kills. Emily O’Brien contributed with seven aces, four kills and 11 service points. Game scores were 25-21, 25-21 and 25-13.

Lake-Lehman 3, Wyoming Area 1

Mackenzie Barker pounded down eight kills and Devin Lindley served seven aces, sparking the Black Knights to a 25-21, 25-27, 25-20, 25-23 victory on Wednesday.

Barker also added six digs and six blocks in the win, while Lindley finished wiht five digs. Hailey Kubiski added three kills and four digs for Lehman.

Hunter Chervenitski finished with nine kills and six digs for the Warriors, who also received 10 assists and eight digs from Jenna Chackan and 12 digs and six service points from Liv Astolfi. Brandi Sorokin served six points and made three kills for Wyoming Area.

Delaware Valley 3, Wyoming Area 0

Wyoming Area fell to Delaware Valley, 3-0, on Thursday.

Postponements

Pittston Area’s field hockey game with Abington Heights, originally scheduled for Friday, has been postponed to a date and time to be named later.
