KINGSTON – Pittston Area had four players on the winning team Nov. 26 when the first District 2 Field Hockey Senior Classic was held at Wyoming Valley West’s Spartan Stadium.

Bailey Jordan, Nina Cirelli, Abbie Vaxmonsky and Hannah Robbins all played for the East team in a 3-1 win over the West.

Wyoming Area’s Jalen Rhodes and Lindsey Pozaic were part of the West team.

The team’s played four, 20-minute quarters and were scoreless for more than 30 minutes before the East went ahead on a play that involved Jordan.

Holy Redeemer’s Kayla Kruk centered a pass from deep in the right corner.

While Jordan occupied a defender in front, the ball got through to Schuyler Smith from Abington Heights, who scored the first of her two goals.

After being outshot, 10-0, in the first quarter, the East built a 2-0 halftime lead. The lead reached 3-0 before the West broke the shutout with 1:18 to play.

Leah Mullery from Holy Redeemer, who helped organize the game with Hazleton Area’s Megan Reed, scored the other East goal. Morgan Murphy from Crestwood had an assist.

Madison Woods from Wyoming Valley West scored for the West.

Pittston Area players joined seniors from Holy Redeemer, Abington Heights, Crestwood, Hanover Area, Meyers, GAR, Wallenpaupack, Coughlin, Hanover Area and Dallas on the winning East team.

Wyoming Area players were with those from Honesdale, Wyoming Valley West, Berwick, Lake-Lehman, Delaware Valley, Northwest, Tunkhannock, Lackawanna Trail and Wyoming Seminary on the West.

The game raised $3,000 for Cori’s Place, a Wilkes-Barre non-profit agency that provides day programs for adults with intellectual disabilities from Luzerne and Wyoming Counties.
