PLAINS TWP. – A drunken Michael Angel Roman molested a toddler for about a minute before being discovered by the girl's mother, according to charges filed Thursday.
Pittston police charged Roman, 57, with sexually assaulting a 2-year-old girl inside a boarding house where Roman lives at 200 S. Main St. on Jan. 6. Police said the girl's mother, who had banged on the locked bedroom door, found Roman lying next to the girl.
He was charged with two counts each of indecent assault and simple assault, and one count each of terroristic threats and possessing instruments of crime. He was arraigned before District Judge Diana Malast in Plains Township and jailed at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility for lack of $150,000 bail.
According to the criminal complaint:
The mother woke up and noticed a door to a bedroom where her daughter was sleeping was closed. She banged on the door and allegedly saw her daughter with no clothes and Roman lying next to the toddler on the floor.
Police allege the girl's underwear was found on Roman's bed.
Roman was arrested on terroristic charges that night and jailed at the county prison, where he was questioned about the alleged sexual assault.
Roman initially denied he assaulted the girl. He later admitted he had been drinking all day and molested the girl for about a minute until he realized what he was doing, asking police, How could I do this at 57 years old, the complaint says.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled on Jan. 16.
