WEST PITTSTON – Firefighters returned to 100 Exeter Ave. late Monday morning to extinguish a flare up in the attic of a house that was destroyed by flames Sunday night.

The three-story home of Joseph Castellino and his wife, Joann, since 1976 sustained unrepairable damage in the two-alarm blaze. Flames also destroyed two vehicles parked in a carport attached to the house and heavily scorched another home at 130 Linden St.

Joseph Castellino, 70, suffered minor burns when he tried to put out the flames with a fire extinguisher. He was treated and released from a local hospital early Monday.

The roof of the large brick house, which is about 100 yards from the Susquehanna River and which was inundated by the flood in September 2011, collapsed during the height of the fire Sunday night. A house at 102 Exeter Ave., directly next to the fire-damaged house, was not damaged by flames but remains under renovations due to flooding.

Diane Castellino, sister-in-law of the homeowners, said Sunday night that Joann Castellino was cooking in the kitchen when she saw flames on the porch and heard five explosions.

Most of the fire damage was near the carport, which is accessible on Linden Street, and to the upper floors.

West Pittston firefighters and paramedics from Avoca returned to the house just after 11 a.m. Monday when flames rekindled in the attic. About five firefighters entered the house with a hose to extinguish the flare up.

Fire Chief John Janczewski could not be reached for comment on Monday.

A state police deputy fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
