EXETER TWP. — The fourth annual John Anthony “Beno” Borzell Drive for Excellence Golf Tournament was held on Saturday, Sept. 19 at Emanon Country Club.

The tournament is in memory of John Anthony Borzell, who died following a motorcycle accident in September 2011. Since then, the Borzell family has sponsored the event with all proceeds helping the John Anthony “Beno” Borzell Memorial Scholarship.

Borzell, a 2007 Wyoming Area graduate, was 22 when he died. He graduated from Wilkes University in 2011.

The scholarship awards $1,700 to Wyoming Area students with at least a 3.5 grade point average who plan to follow Borzell’s path into a science field in college. The awards are given based on a four-person panel’s judging of essays from interested candidates who meet the criteria.

The memorial funds also allow the Borzells to maintain a connection with Wilkes. Borzell graduated magna cum laude from Wilkes in May 2011 with a B.S. in environmental science and landed a job in Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey with Enviro-Sciences of Delaware at the time of his death.
