SCRANTON — The Wyoming Valley Conference hosted its inaugural senior all-star girls lacrosse game Monday at Scranton Prep’s Loyola Complex.
The East team went on to a 13-7 victory over the West.
The WVC referees organized the game which featured players from seven teams. District 2 champion Wyoming Seminary was unable to participate because the Blue Knights are still active in the PIAA tournament.
Coughlin’s Kristi Pearage led the East with five goals. Teammate Savanna Robinson provided two goals and an assist.
Pittston Area’s Rachel Ferrance and Dana Zalewski each scored twice for the East.
“For me, it was a ton of fun to coach girls we play against” Wyoming Seminary and West coach Catie Kersey said. “We had some Scranton Prep girls come over to play for us. It was just a nice way to end the season and get one more lacrosse game in. Going from rivals to teammates is nice.”
The East came out on top, despite not having a goalkeeper. There was only one senior goalkeeper on the roster — Dallas’ Kathleen Brown. To handle the situation, organizers flipped the goal over to a small triangle-shaped size.
“I think the hard thing is that these girls aren’t used to playing with each other,” Kersey said. “So knowing names and all of those things. I thought they played well and had a ton of fun. I don’t think anyone was stressed about the score.”
The East posted five of the first six goals of the game to take an early commanding lead. Pearage corralled a high pass from Robinson and one-time it into the net for a 4-1 advantage. Crestwood’s Paige Zaleppa circled a defender on a clear and dumped it into net to go ahead 5-1.
The West started strong in the second half, trimming the deficit to 8-5 when Tunkhannock’s Savannah Gleason found net, thanks to Dallas’ Kyleigh Kravits’ pass with 16:24 remaining. The East responded with three straight.
Dallas’ Katie Kapral scored a hat trick for the West. Tunkhannock senior Rachel Miroslaw scored twice.
Since lacrosse’s inception in 2011, the WVC has grown from three teams to 11 this season.
“Absolutely, I think the more girls play in the summer, and the more and more opportunities there are the better we are going to get,” Kersey said.
