DURYEA — A suspicious package found outside of the Duryea VFW Thursday night led to a bomb unit being called to the scene and the evacuation of the facility.

Ultimately, police determined there was no danger.

Officers were dispatched to the VFW on Stephenson Street just after 10 p.m. Thursday for reports of the package.

Placed near the back door of the building, the package reportedly had a sign on it, reading “please open me.”

After finding the package, police evacuated the VFW and requested assistance from both the Duryea Fire Department and the Scranton Police Department’s bomb unit.

Police shut down the street in front of the VFW, and alerted nearby residents that an evacuation might be necessary.

When the Scranton Police Department bomb unit arrived on scene, it investigated the package and determined there was no danger. The package was removed from the scene by police.

No further evacuations were necessary.

Duryea Police ask anyone with information in regards to the incident call 570-457-1721, ext. 2.
