LAFLIN — With two years left in her second term as elected mayor Dorothy Yazurlo resigned Sunday, citing her frustration in attempting to bring regional police coverage to the borough.

A majority of council members want to continue with the Pennsylvania State Police providing service after the borough disbanded its police department in 2014, Yazurlo said. Knowing that’s not going to change and feeling that she’s getting nowhere on the issue, Yazurlo said she decided to leave the office that’s she’s held for nearly 10 years.

“In good conscience, it’s what I had to do,” Yazurlo, a Democrat, said Monday.

Council must appoint someone to fill the office, she said. It meets Tuesday at 6 p.m. to reorganize in the borough building at 47 Laflin Road. Its next regularly scheduled meeting is at 6 p.m. on Jan. 23.

Yazurlo said the state police have done a good job. “The only problem is they have a great deal of coverage,” she said.

She said she supported a plan to have Jenkins Township provide coverage for the borough and nearby Yatesville at a cost of $65,000 for 2018. Yazurlo said Laflin could pay for the service without raising taxes.

“I can no longer continue to serve when I feel I can get nowhere,” Yazurlo said.

Yazurlo, who was first appointed and then elected to twice to consecutive four-year terms, thanked borough residents for their support and promised to remain active. “I will continue to support my community in any way I can,” she said.
