PITTSTON — Lindsey Appel has conquered triathlons all long the east coast, but her greatest challenge awaits her later this year.
The Pittston resident will travel to Gold Coast, Australia to compete in the International Triathlon United (ITU) Grand World Triathlon Championship.
The event will be held Sept. 12-15.
“People have had to qualify for this race and there are divisions in this race,” Appel said. “I think there are 10 different races going on in a five-day period.”
Appel has competed in 15 triathlons, but this will mark the first time she’s traveled outside the country to participate in one.
“Most of them have taken place in Virginia, Maryland, and that’s kind of when I started and got really into it,” she said. “But, most recently I did (one) in White Haven back in September. I also competed at the USA Triathlon Nationals in Omaha (Nebraska) this past August.”
It was Appel’s race in Omaha that qualified her for the ITU Grand World Triathlon Championship.
She’ll compete in the 30-34 age group and her races include a 750M swim in open water, a 20K bike ride and then a 5K run.
To prepare herself, Appel hired a coach to better prepare her for the tough competition.
“This is actually all very new to me,” she said. “This is my fourth year going seriously into the sport. The last three years I’ve made my own workouts, but now I have a coach telling me what to do. It’s very different.”
Appel meets with her coach once or twice a week to go over a training regime as well as help her maintain a certain weight.
She recently ran a 5K in which he attended to give her helpful feedback afterwards.
With training, work and a world championship race this year, Appel’s schedule is busier than ever.
“I do have my entire race scheduled and I have a busy year this year,” she said. “I’m getting married this year and my brother is getting married the week before I compete. I’m taking things one step at a time.”
Appel can’t wait to compete with athletes from all over the world this September.
“Just to be able to compete with others from around the world is going to be amazing,” she said. “I’ve been in this area and the Virginia/Maryland area, and I know those races. It’s going to be awesome to race with people from all over the world.”
