Pittston Area Intermediate Center announces back to school information


HUGHESTOWN — On behalf of the Intermediate Center Administration, Faculty and Staff, and new principal Gennaro Zangardi, the following information is for all students and their parents to know prior to the beginning of the 2018-2019 school year.

Students will receive their student handbook on the first day of school. Families should take the time to review and to discuss the contents of the student handbook.

First Day of School

The first day of school is Monday Aug. 27. Those who have no registered their child can contact the High School Administrative office at 570-654-2415 ext. 2108 to make an appointment.

Important Transportation Notice

Parents are to send a note with their child to give to their teacher stating how he/she will be going home (for example bus number and location of bus stop, car or walking student, Riverview walking students, or special transportation (for example Vans/Daycare.)

Daily Arrival and Departure Schedule

Car and walking students may begin to arrive at 8:20 a.m. Second grade students are to report to the Cafeteria. Third students will report to the band room, and fourth grade students are to report to the Gym. All students will report to their classrooms at 8:40 a.m. Van Students dismiss at 3:10 p.m out the Intermediate Center Main Entrance and Riverview walker students will dismiss at 3:10 p.m. out the side of the Intermediate Center. Car students will dismiss at 3:15 p.m. through the Middle School Main Entrance. Bus students will board the buses starting at 3:25 p.m. as the buses arrive. If there is a change in how your child will go home, parents are asked to send in a note to their homeroom teacher.

Morning Arrival Procedure

All parents who drive their child to school in the morning are reminded to use the driveway on the side of the Intermediate Center and student drop off is at 8:20 a.m.. In order to keep our students safe, they are not allowed to be dropped off in the parking lot. Please adhere to the Security Guards directives.

Dress Code

The Pittston Area School District has a structured dress code for all students. Parents and students are reminded to review and follow the district’s structured dress code policy. The policy is available through the district’s website at www.pittstonarea.com or a copy can be obtained in the Intermediate Center’s Office.


Parents are reminded to contact the Intermediate Center Office prior to 9:00 a.m. on the day their child will be absent from school. Upon return to school, a written excuse/medical excuse must be provided to your child’s homeroom teacher.

Free and Reduced Lunch Applications

Free and reduced lunch applications will be sent home with your child in the first few days of school. Applications are due back as soon as possible.

Back To School Night

The Annual Intermediate Center’s Back to School Night for parents will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5. Parents will have the opportunity to meet with our administration, faculty, and staff.

PTO News

The first PTO meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11 in the middle school cafeteria. Dues for a family membership are $5. Officers are Amy Sanguedolce, President; Kimberly Augustine, Vice President; Anne Schardien, Treasurer; Melissa Latona, Secretary; Marissa Maghran, Secretary.

Save the Date

P.T.O. Race for Education fund raiser kick off will be Thursday, Aug. 30. Information will be sent home with the students that day.

School pictures will be taken on Monday, Oct.22 and Tuesday, Oct. 23.
