PITTSTON — Avoca resident Thomas F. Quinnan will receive the Greater Pittston Friendly Sons of St. Patrick Achievement Award when the Friendly Sons gather for the 102nd annual St. Patrick’s Day Banquet on Thursday, March 17.

Quinnan was born in Pittston, the son of the late Edward and Clare Gunning Quinnan. He received his early education at St. Mary’s Assumption School and graduated from St. John the Evangelist High School, and later Penn State Wilkes-Barre.

Quinnan’s training in Air Navigation Systems and Equipment was completed at the FAA Academy in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and management training at The Management Training School in Lawton, Oklahoma. He also studied at the Center for Management Development in Gold Coast, Florida. He attended the Rochester Institute of Technology, majoring in electrical engineering technology.

Quinnan was employed by the Federal Aviation Agency for over 33 years and retired as the Field Office Manager for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Sector. His career was started at the New York International Airport and advanced to a Navigational Aid Specialist assigned to the Newark Sector Office. During his time at Newark, he was assigned to most of the facilities in the state of New Jersey.

In 1975, Quinnan was selected Chief of Navaids And Communications Unit at The Rochester International Airport where he served until his selection as manager at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport. During his career, Quinnan obtained FAA Certification credentials on Instrument Landing Systems, VHF Omnirange, Tactical Air Navigation, Air Traffic Control Towers, and several other Air Traffic Control Systems.

Quinnan was a member of the Manville, New Jersey Volunteer Fire Company No.3 serving as recording secretary and was a fire inspector for the Borough of Manville. He is a past president of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Neil McLaughlin Division in Avoca and past president of the Airport Management Association in Avoca. Quinnan is a member of the Queen of Apostles Parish and a long-standing member of the Friendly Sons.

Quinnan resides in Avoca with his wife, the former Barbara Ann Grace. They have three sons.
