YATESVILLE — The Pittston Area School Board approved a final budget Tuesday evening that totals $52,702,124.

The spending plan calls for a 3.2 percent property tax hike and a millage rate of 15.9820, an increase from last year’s millage of 14.9773. A mill is the equivalent of $1 in property taxes for every $1,000 in assessed value.

According to school board officials, $2.5 million will pay for roof repairs at the Intermediate Center, Primary Center and middle school.

School board members also approved the hiring of Gennaro Zangardi as the new Intermediate Center principal.

Zangardi was recently teaching political science at the high school and looks forward to continuing his career with the Pittston Area School District in a new role.

“I’m just very excited to get started,” he said. “Pittston Area has a special place in my heart. I think it’s the best district around and I’m just getting ready to get started with such terrific teachers down there in the Intermediate Center. I know the great job the teachers down there do, and I’m excited to get to work with them.”

The next school board meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 17 at the high school library, 5 Stout St.
