Pittston Area’s 9-11-year-old softball team is getting its Little League tournament season started after every other Greater Pittston team has completed its season.

Pittston Area went unopposed through the District 16 and Section 5 tournaments.

The Section 5 stage was a confusing one with Pittston Area first being told it did not have an opponent, then told there would be a Section 5 championship season that ultimately never took place.

Pittston Area is in Yough where it was scheduled to face West Point from Section 2 Friday in the opener to the five-team, double-elimination state tournament.

Clinton from Section 3 and Lower Perkiomen from Section 8 also made the field while the host, Yough, was awarded a spot.

With only five teams, the tournament, which was originally scheduled to continue through Thursday is now scheduled to run through Tuesday.

SECTION 5 JUNIOR BASEBALL

Pittston Area finished second in Section 5, going 2-2 in the tournament with losses at the beginning and end against tournament champion Abington.

Pittston Area earned a second shot at the champs when it defeated Back Mountain, 15-4, in five innings in the elimination bracket final July 20.

Nickolas Cerasaro went the distance for the win, striking out four.

Aidan Flaim had two hits and scored twice.

Ryan Turant had a hit, run and two RBI. Brayden Powers had a hit and scored three times.

Abington ended the tournament with a 6-0 victory over Pittston Area the next day.

Alex Hoban, Eric Pisack, Jack Long and Connor Mulhern had the hits for Pittston Area as Abington’s Andrew Albright and Michael Stanton combined on a four-hitter.

EAST REGIONAL 8-10-YEAR-OLD SOFTBALL

The East Regional championship, the highest level of competition in the age group, is being conducted at the Jenkins Township Little League field through Friday.

Mountain Top, the District 16 champion, is serving as host team in the tournament that also features state champions from Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Connecticut, Maine, Rhode Island and Vermont.

Action was scheduled to get underway Saturday.
