Santana working as sonar technician
SILVERDALE, W.A. — Petty Officer 2nd Class Christopher Santana, of Pittston, is currently working as a sonar technician aboard one of the world’s most advanced ballistic missile submarines, USS Nebraska.
As a sonar technician, Santana is responsible for detecting, tracking and classifying contacts while underway.

WILKES-BARRE — Laura Solomon, of Dupont, is completing summer research at Wilkes University with Kenneth Klemow, a biology professor, who is working with students as they add specimens to the Rosenthal Herbarium at Wilkes University.

WILKES-BARRE — Neil Murphy, of Pittston, is completing summer research at Wilkes University with Jeffrey Stratford, associate professor of biology, who is working with students to use DNA barcodes to identify insects and plants.

WILKES-BARRE — Matthew Yatison, of Pittston, is completing summer research at Wilkes University with Ken Klemow, professor of biology and geoenvironmental science; Donald Mencer, associate professor of chemistry, and William Terzaghi, professor of biology.
Thornton honored for academic achievements
PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Abby Thornton, of West Pittston, who was awarded a bachelor’s degree during Providence College commencement ceremonies held on May 20, was recently honored for her academic achievements as a chemistry major.
Thornton was awarded the Highest Academic Record in Chemistry. She was a member of the Liberal Arts Honors Program and the Women’s Field Hockey team.
Thornton is pursuing a career in the pharmaceutical industry.
