Monko named Employee of the Year

SCRANTON — Jill Monko, of West Wyoming, has been named Employee of the Year at Commonwealth Health Regional Hospital of Scranton. Each hospital names an Employee of the Year, Clinical Manager of the Year and Manager of the Year. The Employee of the Year and a guest are honored at an awards celebration in Franklin, Tenn. The trip includes a stay in Nashville and tours of that city’s sights. Monko, a staffing coordinator in the hospital’s nursing administration department, joined the staff in 2007. In her role, she works with the director of nursing and nurse managers to schedule staff for all departments and shifts. Monko was singled out for her dedication to the staff and for her positive attitude even during challenging times. Coworkers describe her as the “glue that keeps the nursing staff together” as she organizes luncheons and birthday celebrations while keeping the schedules organized.

Avvisato named to dean’s list

HARRISBURG — Rhiannon Avvisato, of Avoca, has been named to the dean’s list at Widener University Commonwealth Law School for the fall 2018 semester. Students named to the list earned a grade point average in the top 20 percent of their class and division for the semester.

Local students perform internship

WILKES-BARRE — Wilkes University students will complete internships as part of their academic work in the winter semester 2019. Internships complement academic work, provide students with practical experience in their field of study and prepare them to enter careers.

Greater Pittston area students involved in internships are:

David Zydko, of Duryea, will complete an internship at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in the winter semester 2019.

Kierstin Grillo, of Exeter, will complete an internship at Special Guest App in the winter semester 2019.

Jennifer Bone, of Exeter, will complete an internship at Wyoming Valley Children’s Association in the winter semester 2019.

Collin Gryskiewicz, of Luzerne, will complete an internship at Wilkes University’s EES Department in the winter semester 2019.

Former local teaches in Tonga

DALLAS TWP. — John Eisenhauer, formerly of Dupont, worked with Misericordia University students in the Government, Law and National Security Club who recently sent a care package to a school in Tonga under the direction of a program alumnus who joined the Peace Corps shortly after graduating in 2017.

Eisenhauer is teaching grades 2-6 at the Government Primary School Fotua on the island of Foa, which is in the Ha’apai Island group in the southern Pacific Ocean.

The son of Bill and Angela Emmert, of Nanticoke, and Michael and Jessica Eisenhauer, of Dupont teaches about 100 of the 110 students enrolled in the school that teaches first through sixth grades.

Kaufer offers assistance

EXETER — A representative from Rep. Aaron Kaufer’s (R-Luzerne) office is at the Exeter Borough Building, 1101 Wyoming Ave., on the third Friday of each month from noon to 2 p.m. to assist veterans and persons with disabilities.

Augustine named to dean’s list

CHESTER — Kaylin Augustine, of Wyoming, has been named to the dean’s list at Widener University for the fall 2018 semester. The Dean’s List recognizes full-time students who earned a grade point average of 3.50 and above for the semester.

Two named to dean’s list at RIT

ROCHESTER, NY — Lucas Mark and Alia Gestl, both of Pittston, have been named to the dean’s list at Rochester Institute of Technology for the 2018 fall semester:

Lahart named to dean’s list

LORETTO — Zachary Lahart, a biology major from Exeter, was named to the dean’s list at Saint Francis University for the fall 2018 semester.

Antal receives bachelor’s degree

ATLANTA, GA — Hunter Antal, of Pittston, earned a bachelor’s degree from Georgia State University during December 2018 commencement ceremonies.

Polit-Moran named to dean’s list

Jude Polit-Moran, a senior majoring in biological sciences: cell & development at the University of Rochester, has been named to the dean’s list for academic achievement for the fall 2018 semester.

Polit-Moran, of West Pittston, is the child of Sami Lynn Polit-Panek, of West Pittston, and John Moran, of Carbondale and a graduate of Wyoming Area High School.
