Pittston Area’s Isabella Dessoye finished in the top half of the Class 3A girls field during Saturday’s Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Cross Country Championships.
Dessoye completed the 3.1-mile Hershey Parkview Course in 20:56 for 116th out of 238 runners in the race.
The junior was part of an uncommonly strong finish by District 2 girls in the state’s largest enrollment classification.
Anna Pucilowski from Abington Heights, Katie Kozich from Crestwood and Grace Holderith from Delaware Valley medaled with top-25 finishes. They were 18th, 23rd and 24th.
Norwin and Madelyn McCartney from Emmaus won the state titles.
Wyoming Area’s Isabella Costa was 138th out of 249 finishers in Class 2A girls in 22:22.
Erie Cathedral Prep and Saucon Valley’s Virginia Kraus won titles.
Old Forge’s Cali Talarico and Elena Bialkowski were 159th and 169th out of 250 in Class A girls.
Kendyl Weisgold was Elk Lake’s lone medalist by placing ninth to lead the team to fourth place.
Shady Side Academy and Mercer Academy’s Maggie Jewell were champions.
Caden Boettger from Pittston Area was 246th out of 252 runners in Class 3A boys.
The Wyoming Valley Conference and District 2 thrived in Class A boys.
Michael Fritz from Northwest, a WVC team that competes in District 4 in the postseason, won the individual title.
Kendel Jones was second while leading Elk Lake to its third state championship. Two teammates and five total District 2 runners earned medals.
North Penn (Class 3A) and Hughesville (2A) won the other team titles while Travis Furmanski from Cedar Crest and Jonah Montagnese from second-place Quaker Valley ran to gold medals.
Crestwood’s Mason Staude was 11th in Class 2A to lead the District 2 entries.
