Adam Musto has a one-event season as the sole Pittston Area boys tennis player this spring.

Without the minimum three players, Pittston Area did not conduct a regular season in the sport, but Musto is entered in the District 2 Class 3A singles tournament that opens Tuesday at North Pocono Middle School.

There are 21 players entered in the tournament and Musto has a bye into the round-of-16 where the has an immediate challenge, going against fifth-seeded Sam Weis, the number-one singles player on district team champion Abington Heights.

The District 2 singles tournaments originally would have started Saturday, but district officials decided on Friday to postpone the event because of the predicted foul weather.

Class 2A players will be at Kirby Park in Wilkes-Barre Tuesday.

Adam Wisnewski and Nick Winsock are the Wyoming Area entries in the tournament.

There are 30 entries in Class 2A, so only the top two seeds have first-round byes.

Wisnewski opens against Holy Redeemer’s Matthew Schuler. Winsock’s first match is against Stephen Parinisi from Montrose.

Competition continues Tuesday until the four semifinalists are determined in each tournament.

The semifinals and finals are likely to be played Wednesday afternoon at Kirby Park.

The doubles tournaments are scheduled to begin Saturday.

Wyoming Area will have entries in Class 2A, which again will be contested at Kirby Park.

TEAM TENNIS

Nick Winsock and Gabe Cable combined to win at second doubles, but Wyoming Area fell to top-seeded Scranton Prep, 3-1, Tuesday in the District 2 Class 2A boys tennis team tournament.

Winsock-Cable rolled over Seth Miller-Ben Hill, 6-0, 6-1.

Scranton Prep, the Lackawanna League champion which was undefeated until losing to Dallas in the final, won points at first and second singles and first doubles.

Anthony Nelson-Charles Alfano won the first set at first doubles to extend the match into three sets before falling.

Jacob Nelson was leading the second set, 4-3, after James Cawley from Scranton Prep won the first set, 6-4, at third singles. Their match was halted once the team outcome was determined.

LACROSSE

District 2 has set plans for its lacrosse tournaments.

All games will be played at the home field of the higher seed.

Wyoming Area (10-1) has already clinched a berth in the field where the top eight out of 12 teams in the district will make the field.

Pittston Area (3-6) was ninth in the playoff ratings race behind North Pocono, .428-.406, going into Friday.

The Wyoming Area boys (1-8) were also in danger of missing the playoffs, ranking 10th out of 11 teams pursuing eight berths going into Friday’s games.

All three Greater Pittston teams compete in Class 2A in lacrosse.

The Class 2A girls quarterfinals are scheduled for May 19.
