Pittston Area shut out three straight Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 softball opponents between Monday and Friday, adding to its April 27 non-league shutout of rival Wyoming Area.
The Lady Patriots are unscored upon in 29 innings, starting with their come-from-behind victory over South Williamsport and through the four shutouts. They also opened the season with four straight shutouts and a streak that reached 25 innings.
Pittston Area, the only unbeaten in District 2, is closing in on the Division 1 title at 9-0. The Lady Patriots are 11-0 overall.
Pittston Area 9, Wilkes-Barre Area 0
Gabby Gorzkowski drove in four runs to help back Gianna Adams on a 19-strikeout, one-hitter Friday over visiting Wilkes-Barre Area.
Gorzkowski was 3-for-4 with two doubles.
Adams struck out the game’s first 11 and last six batters.
Pittston Area scored all nine of its runs in the fourth innings. Gorzkowski drove in the first two runs with a double and the last two with another.
Adams did not walk a batter. She allowed just one baserunner on a Madalyn McGuinness two-out single through the right side with two out in the top of the fourth.
Tori Stephenson singled, doubled, scored twice and drove in a run.
Sam Herbert also scored twice while Julia Mehal drove in a run.
Lily Hintze and Adams also had doubles.
Wyoming Area 15, Susquehanna 0
Alexa Gasek struck out eight of the 10 batters she faced in a three-inning, no-hitter Friday afternoon as Wyoming Area shut out visiting Susquehanna to clinch a District 2 Class 4A playoff berth.
It was the second shutout of the week for the Lady Warriors.
Arianna Gaylord drove in five runs and Addison Gaylord drove in three.
The Lady Warriors scored six runs in the first inning. They ended the game on the Mercy Rule in the bottom of the third with eight runs while the Lady Sabers were recording just one out.
Arianna Gaylord’s bases-loaded triple ended the game.
Gasek hit one batter and did not walk anyone.
Arianna Gaylord was 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Addison Gaylord was 2-for-2 with two triples, three runs and three RBI.
The Lady Warrior had 17 hits, including Gasek going 3-for-3 with a double.
Maggie Hallman, Kaia Brown, Marissa Giardina and Renee Haddock all added two hits. Hallman, Giardina and Haddock scored twice while Brown drove in two runs.
Berwick 7, Wyoming Area 6
Gabby Starr drove in the tying and winning runs Thursday to lead visiting Berwick over Wyoming Area in a WVC Division 2 game.
The teams ended the week tied for third in the division at 7-3 and no longer in title contention behind Lake-Lehman, which has clinched no worse than a first-place tie with Holy Redeemer. Wyoming Area ended the week with a 10-6 overall record.
Berwick rallied past Wyoming Area by scoring three times each in the sixth and seventh innings. Starr had three hits and three RBI.
Addison Gaylord had a triple, single and two runs scored to lead the Wyoming Area offense. Alexa Gasek drove in two runs and Kaia Brown doubled.
Pittston Area 3, Tunkhannock 0
Gianna Adams struck out the game’s first 17 batters as Pittston Area moved closer to the division championship when it defeated won Wednesday at Tunkhannock, the team it lost to in a playoff for the championship last season.
The Lady Patriots scored three times in the top of the first, then turned to Adams to protect the lead. She finished with a one-hitter that included 20 strikeouts and no walks.
Tunkhannock broke up the perfect game with two out in the sixth and had a second runner reach on an error.
Adams led off the game with a single. Marina Antal delivered an RBI single with one out and Gabby Gorzkowski doubled in two runs with two outs.
Pittston Area 8, Dallas 0
Sam Herbert tripled, singled and drove in two runs Monday as Pittston Area shut out visiting Dallas.
Gia Roman also had two hits and two RBI.
Gianna Adams struck out 12 and did not walk a batter in her three-hit shutout.
Julia Mehal and Lily Hintze also had two hits and scored for the Lady Patriots. Hintze had a double.
Wyoming Area 16, Hanover Area 0
Wyoming Area scored eight times in the top of the first Monday on the way to its four-inning victory in the Division 2 game.
Addison Gaylord highlighted a six-run fourth inning with a bases-loaded triple. She finished with two hits and three runs scored.
Marissa Giardina had three hits and three runs scored. Morgan Slusser had two hits and two runs.
Alexa Gasek tossed a three-hit shutout with six strikeouts and no walks. She was 2-for-2 with two walks.
