John Connors, who coached girls tennis the fall, has added head coaching responsibilities of the boys team to his duties at Pittston Area.

Connors served as an assistant coach last season when the Patriots went 7-3 to finish second out of four teams in Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 in Elaina Menichelli’s only season as head coach.

The Patriots have five seniors on the squad and return seven players from last year’s team, which also qualified for the District 2-4 Class 3A Subregional team tournament.

Seniors Nick Harth and Matt Costello are among those returnees. They will occupy the top two singles spots in the lineup and could be district contenders, according to Connors.

Nick Maglio, Thomas Dessoye, Peter Fox, Jason Romanoski and Michael Rakacunski also return to the team.

Joe Carey, John Romanoski and Nick Mahlon are the other seniors.

“Our team has depth and experience,” Connors said.

Adam Penxa is also contending for a starting spot.

“Our final slots are not set yet as we are conducting team matches,” said Connors, who is preparing the team to open the Wyoming Valley Conference season at home March 26 against Crestwood.
