Pittston Area finished second in Pennsylvania in the Little League Softball Major division when it lost only to champion Tunkhannock in the state tournament.
Isabella Giardina went 3-for-3 July 14 when Pittston Area defeated St. Mary’s, 9-5, in the elimination bracket final to earn a second shot at Tunkhannock.
Tunkhannock won the state championship game, 8-2, July 15. It had also beaten Pittston Area, 8-1, in the winners’ bracket final.
Cassie Hintze also had three hits in the win over St. Marys.
Gianna Adams struck out eight while throwing a complete game. She also had two doubles.
Ava Callahan had a two-run double and a single.
Marina Antal and Maura Mihalka also had doubles.
Mihalka hit a two-run homer to account for the scoring in the state final where Pittston Area would have needed to win two straight games to claim the state championship and an East Regional berth.
Adams and Hintze each had a double and single in the loss.
Pittston Area won the District 16 title unopposed and, after originally believing it was unopposed going into the state tournament, has learned it will now play a best-of-three series in Jessup against the host Carbino Club to determine the Section 5 champion and state representative.
The series had not started as of the tournament’s previously scheduled starting date of Thursday.
