Johanna Rehill moves up and back while taking over as the head coach of the Pittston Area girls volleyball team, which will begin official practices Monday.
Rehill moves up from the assistant coaching position she held two of the past three seasons under Dani McAndrew, who resigned in the spring to concentrate on furthering her education.
A fifth- and sixth-grade reading teacher at the Pittston Area Middle School, Rehill has been in and out of the program since playing three years for the Lady Patriots while in high school. She missed her senior year with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in her knee.
Rehill previously was head coach of the girls volleyball team for two years and also served another stint as assistant coach. She has also coached junior high girls basketball at Pittston Area.
The transition takes place with the program on the rise. The Lady Patriots have put together three straight winning seasons after combining to go just 5-77 in five seasons covering the first half of the 2010s.
“We’re just trying to maintain that,” Rehill said. “We have a lot of good, athletic freshmen coming up so that’s very promising.
“Our returning varsity players, everybody is working very hard, so we hope to be successful again.”
Rehill praised the dedication and cohesiveness the team has shown in rising through the ranks of the Wyoming Valley Conference.
“They work very well together,” she said.
McAndrew had served as head coach for five seasons.
