Nick Scavo, Cole Coolbaugh qualify for district golf tournament

EXETER — Pittston Area’s Nick Scavo and Wyoming Area’s Cole Coolbaugh made it through the Sept. 24 Wyoming Valley Conference qualifier for the District 2 Individual Golf Championships.

Scavo shot 12-over-par, 83 and Coolbaugh shot 88 during the tournament at Fox Hill Country Club.

They are the only two Greater Pittston golfers who will take part in Monday’s district tournament at Elmhurst Country Club.

Scavo tied for ninth among the 16 qualifiers in Class 3A, led by Dallas freshman Logan Paczewski, the only player to break par when he shot a 67. Scavo was six shots ahead of the playoff needed to determine the last spot.

Coolbaugh finished tied for 15th in Class 2A where 18 players advanced and a playoff was needed at 91. Lake-Lehman’s Bobby Lugiano repeated as medalist by shooting a 73.

GIRLS TENNIS

District 2 has scheduled its postseason, beginning with the team tournament Wednesday through Friday.

The first round will be played Wednesday and quarterfinals Thursday at the higher seeds’ home courts. The semifinals and finals are at Kirby Park.

The singles tournament is scheduled for Oct. 11-12 at Kirby Park. Doubles are set for Oct. 16-17 there.
